Well, yes, it Has been a while.  It's a heck of a thing trying to keep about a dozen typing projects going at once but this song popped up on the player yesterday and I thought to myself, "Self, I bet that's on the page already..."

And it wasn't.  That's a sign, as far as I can tell.

Now if I only knew what the lyrics meant...

Have a good day:

The Doobie Brothers
Greatest Hits - 2001
What a Fool Believes

He came from somewhere back in her long ago
The sentimental fool don't see
Trying hard to recreate
What had yet to be created once in her life

She musters a smile
For his nostalgic tale
Never coming near what he wanted to say
Only to realize
It never really was

She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As he rises to her apology
Anybody else would surely know
He's watching her go

But what a fool believes he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
What seems to be
Is always better than nothing
And nothing at all keeps sending him...

Somewhere back in her long ago
Where he can still believe there's a place in her life
Someday, somewhere, she will return

She had a place in his life
He never made her think twice
As he rises to her apology
Anybody else would surely know
He's watching her go

But what a fool believes he sees
No wise man has the power to reason away
What seems to be
Is always better than nothing
There's nothing at all
But what a fool believes he sees...

What can I say about Jackson Browne?

He's been playing good music for a long, long time and this particular album was put together after his breakup with Daryl Hannah.  Some say that artists are nuts and they're usually right.  I would say that they get a bit of help along the way to nuts.

ANYway, sometimes it works very, very well for the art.  This is one of the finest songs Mr. Browne has ever put out, as far as I care, though I would have to say that I enjoy Lives in the Balance a bit more.

Through whatever life dumps on you, eventually you have to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and notice, once again, that you're alive (if you're reading this I feel confident saying that you, too, are alive...) and that anything is possible.

Because it is.

This inspirational message brought to you by Earl's apparent good mood.

Have a good day:

Jackson Browne
I'm Alive - 1993
I'm Alive

It’s been a long time since I watched these lights alone
I look around my life tonight and you are gone
I might have done something to keep you if I’d known
How unhappy you had become

While I was dreaming of you
With my heart in your hands
And I was following though
With my beautiful plans

Yeah now I’m rolling down this canyon drive
With your laughter in my head
I’m gonna have to block it out somehow to survive
’cause those dreams are dead
And I’m alive

I want to go where I will never hear your name
I want to lose my sorrow and be free again
And I know I’ve been insane
When I think of places I could have been

But I was dreaming of you
With my heart in your hands
And I was following through
With my beautiful plans

Standing here by the highway side
Watching these trucks blow by
Inches from my face
Yeah thinking ’bout the time I’ve wasted
And the pleasure we once tasted
Looking up and down this road
I’ve been here before
Can’t be here no more

Yeah now I’m rolling down California five
With your laughter in my head
I’m gonna have to block it out somehow to survive
’cause those dreams are dead
And I’m alive

Hey look at the way I believed in you
And loved you all these years
Now you can fill a swimming pool with all my salty tears
If you’d have told me what was in your heart
Instead of all your lies
I thought that it would kill me
But I’m alive
Yeah, I’m alive

One thing I've noticed about the music on the player - a lot of it is old.  I don't think that's any surprise to anyone with a decent music collection who understands what I'm doing here, but it piqued my interest when this came on the player today.

What are we going to be listening to in the future?  Kids are always going to be looking for a new and different sound and there's SO much garbage out there lately it takes a little while for decent music to surface from the ooze of popular music.

Changes are inevitable and once you realize that, it becomes easier to roll with whatever seems to be overwhelming you at each particular moment in time.

I still can find new music that I like and I think that I always will, but there's something about the music you find when your brain is still expanding at an incomprehensible rate that makes it special.

I've always liked Bowie, freakish as he tried to be, and this was a song I've liked since I first heard it a long, long time ago.

Thank Shiva I'm getting younger every day.

Have a great day and enjoy:

David Bowie
Changesonebowie - 1984
Changes

I still don't know what I was waiting for
And my time was running wild
A million dead-end streets
Every time I thought I'd got it made
It seemed the taste was not so sweet
So I turned myself to face me
But I've never caught a glimpse
Of how the others must see the faker
I'm much too fast to take that test

Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
(Turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-Changes
Don't want to be a richer man
Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
(Turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-Changes
Just gonna have to be a different man
Time may change me
But I can't trace time

I watch the ripples change their size
But never leave the stream
Of warm impermanence and
So the days float through my eyes
But still the days seem the same
And these children that you spit on
As they try to change their worlds
Are immune to your consultations
They're quite aware of what they're going through

Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
(Turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-Changes
Don't tell t hem to grow up and out of it
Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
(Turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-Changes
Where's your shame
You've left us up to our necks in it
Time may change me
But you can't trace time

Strange fascination, fascinating me
Changes are taking the pace I'm going through

Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
(Turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-Changes
Oh, look out you rock 'n rollers
Ch-ch-ch-ch-Changes
(Turn and face the strain)
Ch-ch-Changes
Pretty soon you're gonna get a little older
Time may change me
But I can't trace time
I said that time may change me
But I can't trace time

There's not much else I can say with the song selection today.  It would be like complaining about a sharkbite while the damn thing was eating your leg.  It's just doing its thing.

Hope your day is going better than mine.

And it's always darkest before the dawn.

'Tis better and all that...

Ah, heck - It IS a great song, you know.

Have a nice day:

Bob Dylan
Time Out Of Mind - 1967
Love Sick

I'm walking through streets that are dead
Walking, walking with you in my head
My feet are so tired, my brain is so wired
And the clouds are weeping

Did I hear someone tell a lie?
Did I hear someone's distant cry?
I spoke like a child; you destroyed me with a smile
While I was sleeping

I'm sick of love but I'm in the thick of it
This kind of love I'm so sick of it

I see, I see lovers in the meadow
I see, I see silhouettes in the window
I watch them 'til they're gone and they leave me hanging on
To a shadow

I'm sick of love; I hear the clock tick
This kind of love; I'm love sick

Sometimes the silence can be like the thunder
Sometimes I wanna take to the road and plunder
Could you ever be true?
I think of you
And I wonder

I'm sick of love; I wish I'd never met you
I'm sick of love; I'm trying to forget you

Just don't know what to do
I'd give anything to
Be with you

It's been a while since I've heard this song but since I've been walking a bit farther lately, I've been getting to more music per day than I used to.

This was a great band for a short period of time a while back.  Of course, since it was a tribute band, it was bound to be short-term...

At least I found them while I could.

Of course, there used to be music videos on the TV that told us what to listen to...

Ah, heck - Enjoy!

Temple of the Dog
Temple of the Dog - 1990
Say Hello 2 Heaven

Please, mother mercy
Take me from this place
And the long winded curses
I keep hearing in my head
Words never listen
And teachers never learn
Now I'm warm from the candle
But I feel too cold to burn
He came from an island
And he died from the street
He hurt so bad like a soul breaking
But he never said nothing to me
So say hello to heaven

New like a baby
Lost like a prayer
The sky was your playground
But the cold ground was your bed
Poor stargazer
She's got no tears in her eyes
Smooth like whisper
She knows that love heals all wounds with time
Now it seems like too much love
Is never enough, you better seek out
Another road 'cause this one has
Ended abrupt, say hello to heaven

I never wanted
To write these words down for you
With the pages of phrases
Of things we'll never do
So I blow out the candle, and
I put you to bed
Since you can't say to me
Now how the dogs broke your bone
There's just one thing left to be said
Say hello to heaven

I didn't notice this song at first as I was walking/running through the woods on my afternoon exercise kick today.

When I did notice it - well - it was 2/3rds done and I had to hit rewind quick because once the player goes on to the next song it doesn't remember what came before.  I listened a bit more carefully the second time around and for some reason it seemed like a really good song at the time.

And I still like it now.

Give it a try:

The Verve Pipe
Villains - 1996
Barely (If at All)

When my love complained, every word
a breath on my last dandelion
and so lovers will leave and their tears
souvenirs for the very first time

I searched the world reluctant
to find a lover enthusiastic
speak to me barely if at all

When I was a boy, funny things
water wings kept you confident
a belly of wine, similar
to keep yourself indifferent

And I scraped the bargain basement
bought a lover less than fantastic
spoke to me barely if at all

Taste perfume that burns my throat
and i am free of envelope
squeeze an instant out of me

And she placed a hand between our lips
how could anything be so precious
she kissed me barely if at all

And she, with her hand between our lips
gave me what we now have in common
she left me barely if at all

I am nearly cheating.

The rules are plain to see just on the left side of the page and this song is not on my mp3 player.

Yet.

It is on my jumpdrive, however it managed to get there and I have heard the song before, so there it is.

One of Andy Worhol's best creations was the Velvet Underground and except for the later work by Nico (Oh, please don't ask...) remains one of the best sources of talent that I can think of.  My personal favorite to come out of VU is, of course, Lou Reed.

Dammit, I need to buy some more VU.  Thanks to Chuck, who started this particular page in the first place and continues to contribute in more ways than you know.

And if you don't know the song, you should:

Velvet Underground
The Velvet Underground & Nico - 1967
I'll Be Your Mirror

I'll be your mirror
Reflect what you are, in case you don't know
I'll be the wind, the rain and the sunset
The light on your door to show that you're home

When you think the night has seen your mind
That inside you're twisted and unkind
Let me stand to show that you are blind
Please put down your hands
'Cause I see you

I find it hard to believe you don't know
The beauty you are
But if you don't let me be your eyes
A hand in your darkness, so you won't be afraid

When you think the night has seen your mind
That inside you're twisted and unkind
Let me stand to show that you are blind
Please put down your hands
'Cause I see you

I'll be your mirror
(reflect what you are)

I actually remember the exact reason I bought this cd a long time ago: I saw the video for Church on one of those music stations and I liked the bouncy, funny song a whole heck of a lot.  That's how most cds get sold, I guess.

But once I listened to the whole album, I was extremely impressed with the music and lyrics of most of the songs.

This particular song with the rural boys doing their things and yearning for something "out there" has been one of my favorites since I first heard it.

I hope you like it, as well:

Lyle Lovett
Joshua Judges Ruth - 1992
North Dakota

The boys from North Dakota
They drink whisky for their fun
And the cowboys down in Texas
They polish up their guns
And they look across the border
To learn the ways of love

If you love me, say I love you
If you love me, say I do
If you love me, say I love you
If you love me, say I do
And you can say I love you
And you can say I do

So I drank myself some whisky
And I dreamed I was a cowboy
And I rode across the border

If you love me, say I love you
If you love me, take my hand
If you love me, say I love you
If you love me, take my hand
And you can say I love you
And you can have my hand

I remember in the mornings
Waking up
With your arms around my head
You told me you can sleep forever
And I'll still hold you then

Now the weather's getting colder
It's even cold down here
And the words that you have told me
Hang frozen in the air
And sometimes I look right through them
As if they were not there

And the boys from North Dakota
They drink whisky for their fun
And the cowboys down in Texas
They polish up their guns
And they look across the border
To learn the ways of love

This was a song that clubbed me over the head as I was on my walk a few days ago.  I enjoy music more for the stories contained in the lyrics and this one - damn.  I couldn't believe Willie could keep singing this one.

From one perspective it's a great story of helping another person regain their feet after going through - well, about all you can say is a bad situation.  That's a nice story.

The same story is about the fleeting relationships we sometimes find ourselves in and the pessimistic view some people can have.  The growth that can come with a relationship can make a person feel they have outgrown the very one that helped them in the first place and it's time to find another.

The guitar work was perfect for leading into the rest of the backup band and the rising intensity of the music throughout the song, as well.

I'd say enjoy, but that would be entirely dependent on how you interpret the song.

Until later, then:

Willie Nelson
Super Hits - 1994
Angel Flying Too Close the the Ground

If you had not have fallen
Then I would not have found you
Angel flying too close to the ground
And I patched up your broken wing
And hung around a while
Tried to keep your spirits up
While you were feelin' down
I knew someday that you would fly away
For love's the greatest healer to be found
So leave me if you need to
I will still remember
Angel flying too close to the ground
Fly on, fly on past the speed of sound
I'd rather see you up
Than see you down
Leave me if you need to
I will still remember
Angel flying too close to the ground

One of the happy little problems that can happen when you get an mp3 player that's simply got too much memory - more than you will probably ever need is - it gets easier to find new music because you're willing to put darn near anything on it.

That's how I happened to hear Limp Bizkit last night.  I had heard their cover of The Who's Behind Blue Eyes before and was impressed with it.

But the plaintive wail of the chorus on this song appealed to me.  Actual effort was being put into the song and I usually appreciate that.

Enjoy!

Limp Bizkit
Results May Vary - 2003
Drown

It's getting closer to the end, every part of me
And then disaster takes it's toll, and now I'm left with only me
Maybe sorrow plays a role, when you feel unkind
Your abuses will let her stand in a line, forever lost in time

Save me
Save me
Before I drown
Save me
Save me
Before I drown

It's getting closer to the end, I look back and smile
We conquered every single bump in my road, made it all worth while
Just remember how I cared, when it came crashing down
I'd like to toast to all those angels that were always hangin' 'round

Save me
Save me
Before I drown
Save me
Save me
Before I drown, oh

Maybe life ain't what it seems, 'cause it's all a dream
Forgive me
Sometimes I feel like a fool, 'cause I'm so uncool
Forgive me...

Well, it is Valentine's Day and I know I've done my bit for the day.  Of course there has to be a love song on this of all days...

But what is a love song?

From a slightly different point of view, Jimmy Buffet created one of the best love songs ever, but not everyone would agree with that particular classification.

The player is full of songs (as I look down the list on the left...) that are full of love in one way or the other.

But this one came up this morning and I think it says it all.

Don't buy the hype - give some love every chance you get, regardless of the day:

U2
Achtung Baby - 1991
One

Is it getting better, or do you feel the same?
Will it make it easier on you, now you got someone to blame?
You say one love, one life, when it's one need in the night.
One love, we get to share it
Leaves you baby if you don't care for it.

Did I disappoint you or leave a bad taste in your mouth?
You act like you never had love and you want me to go without.
Well, it's too late tonight to drag the past out into the light.
We're one, but we're not the same.
We get to carry each other, carry each other... one

Have you come here for forgiveness,
Have you come to raise the dead
Have you come here to play Jesus to the lepers in your head
Did I ask too much, more than a lot
You gave me nothing, now it's all I got.
We're one, but we're not the same.
Well, we hurt each other, then we do it again.

You say love is a temple, love a higher law
Love is a temple, love the higher law.
You ask me to enter, but then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on to what you got, when all you got is hurt.

One love, one blood, one life, you got to do what you should.
One life with each other: sisters, brothers.
One life, but we're not the same.
We get to carry each other, carry each other.
One, one.

I've been thinking a bit about time lately for no particular reason and this song hit me as I was walking/sliding down my trail in the woods last night.

I enjoyed it so much I overlooked the optimistic lifespan of the author.

The cd is actually available on Amazon, surprisingly, but it's a bit more than I would pay for some music.

So ask me to hear it sometime, I guess:

Five for Fighting

100 Years

I'm 15 for a moment
Caught in between 10 and 20
And I'm just dreaming
Counting the ways to where you are
I'm 22 for a moment
She feels better than ever
And we're on fire
Making our way back from Mars
15 there's still time for you
Time to buy and time to lose
15, there's never a wish better than this
When you only got 100 years to live
I'm 33 for a moment
Still the man, but you see I'm a they
A kid on the way
A family on my mind
I'm 45 for a moment
The sea is high
And I'm heading into a crisis
Chasing the years of my life
15 there's still time for you
Time to buy, Time to lose yourself
Within a morning star
15 I'm all right with you
15, there's never a wish better than this
When you only got 100 years to live
Half time goes by
Suddenly you’re wise
Another blink of an eye
67 is gone
The sun is getting high
We're moving on...
I'm 99 for a moment
Dying for just another moment
And I'm just dreaming
Counting the ways to where you are
15 there's still time for you
22 I feel her too
33 you’re on your way
Every day's a new day...
15 there's still time for you
Time to buy and time to choose
Hey 15, there's never a wish better than this

If ever there were a song that could be both disturbing and perfectly logical, it's this one.

The story of an assassin is clear enough but once you get to the last paragraph and see how the assassin is formed - molded - by his experience and unhappy childhood you are able to understand people a little bit better.

Understanding why people do certain things still doesn't excuse some of the things people do, however.

Considering I didn't hear the song until 1986 or so, I'm surprised each and every time I hear the transition from the assassin's shot to his memories of childhood.

And if that's not enough to get you to hear the song, I don't know what could be.

Have a nice day!

Peter Gabriel
Peter Gabriel (Melt) - 1980
Family Snapshot

The streets are lined with camera crews
Everywhere he goes is news
Today is different
Today is not the same
Today I make the action
Take snapshot into the light, snapshot into the light
I’m shooting into the light

Four miles down the cavalcade moves on
Driving into the sun
If I worked it out right
They won’t see me or the gun

Two miles to go, they’re clearing the road
The cheering has really begun
I’ve got my radio
I can hear what’s going on

I’ve been waiting for this
I have been waiting for this
All you people in tv land
I will wake up your empty shells
Peak-time viewing blown in a flash
As I burn into your memory cells
’cos I’m alive

They’re coming ’round the corner with the bikers at the front
I’m wiping the sweat from my eyes
-it’s a matter of time
-it’s a matter of will
And the governor’s car is not far behind
He’s not the one I’ve got in mind
’cos there he is-the man of the hour, standing in the limousine
I don’t really hate you
-i don’t care what you do
We were made for each other
-me and you
I want to be somebody
-you were like that too
If you don’t get given you learn to take
And I will take you.

Holding my breath
Release the catch
And I let the bullet fly

All turned quiet-i have been here before
Lonely boy hiding behind the front door
Friends have all gone home
There’s my toy gun on the floor
Come back mum and dad
You’re growing apart
You know that I’m growing up sad
I need some attention
I shoot into the light

It's taken a while for an Eagles song to get here, but it's a good one.  In case you hadn't noticed, I tend to like the moody songs.

I also tend to like stories.

SO this was a natural pick, being a combo platter of the two.  Broken hearts, abandonment, angst and all ending with that one thing left in the world when all is said and done: Hope.

So have a brighter day and remember - it could be worse.

Cheers!

Hell Freezes Over - 1994
Wasted Time

Well baby, there you stand
With your little head, down in your hand
Oh, my god, you can’t believe it’s happening
Again
Your baby’s gone, and you’re all alone
And it looks like the end.

And you’re back out on the street.
And you’re tryin’ to remember.
How will you start it over?
You don’t know what became.
You don’t care much for a stranger’s touch,
But you can’t hold your man.

You never thought you’d be alone this far
Down the line
And I know what’s been on your mind
You’re afraid it’s all been wasted time

The autumn leaves have got you thinking
About the first time that you fell
You didn’t love the boy too much, no, no
You just loved the boy to well, farewell
So you live from day to day, and you dream
About tomorrow, oh.
And the hours go by like minutes
And the shadows come to stay
So you take a little something to
Make them go away
And I could have done so many things, baby
If I could only stop my mind from wondrin’ what
I left behind and from worrying ’bout this wasted time

Ooh, another love has come and gone
Ooh, and the years keep rushing on
I remember what you told me before you went out on your own:
’sometimes to keep it together, we got to leave it alone.’
So you can get on with your search, baby, and I can
Get on with mine
And maybe someday we will find , that it wasn’t really
Wasted time
Mm,hm
Oh hoo, ooh, ohh,
Ooh,ooh, mm

I actually don't recall where I heard this song first, but it was the reason for buying the cd in the first place.

The second reason was the presence of Slash and some awesome guitar work.

If I were to complain about any one thing about the [CONTENT/COPY-PROTECTED CD] it would be the copy-protection.  The hoops I needed to jump through in order to get this onto the player were...interesting.

BUT, thanks to thinking differently and the Duluth correspondent, it finally happened.

Fall To Pieces

It's been a long year
Since you've been gone
I've been alone here
I've grown old
I fall to pieces, I'm falling
Fell to pieces and I'm still falling

Every time I'm falling down
All alone I fall to pieces

I keep a journal of memories
I'm feeling lonely, I can't breathe
I fall to pieces, I'm falling
Fell to pieces and I'm still falling

All the years I've tried
With more to go
Will the memories die
I'm waiting
Will I find you
Can I find you
We're falling down
I'm falling

There have been many, many good songs by R.E.M. and I'm one of the people that even likes their newer stuff, much to the chagrin of some of my Georgia friends.

But artists have to keep moving, keep trying new stuff and it's the process that makes it fun.  Of course the old stuff brings back memories, nostalgia and seems like it made more of an impact when you were younger.

Well, everything made more of an impact when you were younger because you hadn't seen or heard enough yet.

I really wish one of the songs from Up or Around the Sun had come up, but sooner or later...

Have a nice day:

Drive

Smack, crack, bushwhacked.
Tie another one to the racks, baby.

Hey kids, rock and roll.
Nobody tells you where to go, baby.

What if I ride?
what if you walk?
What if you rock around the clock?
Tick-tock. tick-tock.
What if you did?
what if you walk?
What if you tried to get off, baby?

Hey, kids, where are you?
Nobody tells you what to do, baby.

Hey kids, shake a leg.
Maybe you're crazy in the head, baby.

Maybe you did. maybe you walked.
Maybe you rocked around the clock.
Tick-tock. tick-tock.
Maybe I ride. maybe you walk.
Maybe I drive to get off, baby.

Hey kids, shake a leg.
Maybe you're crazy in the head, baby.

Ollie, ollie.
Ollie ollie ollie.
Ollie ollie in come free, baby.

Hey, kids, where are you?
Nobody tells you what to do, baby.

Smack, crack. shack-a-lack.
Tie another one to your back, baby.

Hey kids, rock and roll.
Nobody tells you where to go, baby.

Maybe you did. maybe you walk.
Maybe you rock around the clock
Tick-tock. tick-tock.
Maybe I ride. maybe you walk.
Maybe I drive to get off, baby.

Hey kids, where are you?
Nobody tells you what to do, baby.

Hey kids, rock and roll.
Nobody tells you where to go, baby, baby, baby.

The first Doors song today was actually The End, but that was kind of a downer and reminded me of the smell of napalm in the morning...

So I was kind of relieved when another song popped up on the screen because I was in a Doors-kind of mood.

It happens.

It's actually kind of funny because nearly every song I hear by Morrison & Co. puts a scene from some movie or TV show in my head.

Except for this one.

The Doors
Waiting for the Sun - 1968
Five to One

Five to one, baby
One in five
No one here gets out alive, now
You get yours, baby
I’ll get mine
Gonna make it, baby
If we try

The old get old
And the young get stronger
May take a week
And it may take longer
They got the guns
But we got the numbers
Gonna win, yeah
We’re takin’ over
Come on!

Your ballroom days are over, baby
Night is drawing near
Shadows of the evening crawl across the years
Ya walk across the floor with a flower in your hand
Trying to tell me no one understands
Trade in your hours for a handfulla dimes
Gonna’ make it, baby, in our prime

Come together one more time
Get together one more time
Get together one more time
Get together, aha
Get together one more time!
Get together one more time!
Get together one more time
Get together one more time
Get together, gotta, get together

Ohhhhhhhh!

Hey, c’mon, honey
You won’t have along wait for me, baby
I’ll be there in just a little while
You see, I gotta go out in this car with these people and...

Get together one more time
Get together one more time
Get together, got to
Get together, got to
Get together, got to
Take you up in my room and...
Hah-hah-hah-hah-hah
Love my girl
She lookin’ good, lookin’ real good
Love ya, c’mon

I found this to be an interesting question: If someone covers a song written by another artist, do I worry about who I heard or who wrote the song?

It took me about a minute to realize that I'm into music for the poetry, the lyrics, so whoever wrote the song gets the credit.

The reason it was a problem is the receipt of a large Garth Brooks cd collection and one of the first songs from that collection actually heard on the player by Garth was Shameless off of his Ropin' The Wind cd.

I don't mind his version, but I did pull up the original and I prefer Billy's.

Who'd a thunk it.  I prefer the original.

Enjoy:

Billy Joel
Storm Front - 1989
Shameless

Well I'm shameless when it comes to loving you
I'd do anything you want me to
I'd do anything at all

And I'm standing here for all the world to see
There ain't that much left of me
That has very far to fall

You know I'm not a man who has ever been
Insecure about the world I've been living in
I don't break easy, I have my pride
But if you need to be satisfied

I'm shameless, baby I don't have a prayer
Anytime I see you standing there
I go down upon my knees

And I'm changing, I swore I'd never compromise
But you convinced me otherwise
I'll do anything you please

You see in all my life I've never found
What I couldn't resist, what I couldn't turn down
I could walk away from anyone I ever knew
But I can't walk away from you

I have never let anything have this much control over me
Cause I worked too hard to call me life my own
Yes I made myself a world and it worked so perfectly
But it's your world now, I can't refuse
I never had so much to lose
I'm shameless...shameless

You know it should be easy for a man who's strong
To say he's sorry or admit when he's wrong
I've never lost anything I ever missed
But I've never been in love like this...
It's out of my hands
I'm shameless, I don't have the power now
But I don't want it anyhow
So I've got to let it go

I'm shameless, shameless as a man can be
You can make a total fool of me
I just wanted you to know

I am shameless
Shameless...
Shameless...

I suddenly realized that Paul Simon is still alive when I heard this one last night - and that I haven't really listened to the cd that I got 5 years ago.

Hey, he's always been mellow, but it was a step up from the Barry Manilow heard previous to this one.  Actually, the branch that swatted me across the eye was a step up from the Barry, but I digress.

Judging by the Amazon prices, I may have been the only person to buy this cd, but I like what I like.

Give it a try:

You're The One - 2000
That's Where I Belong

Somewhere in a burst of glory
Sound becomes a song
I’m bound to tell a story
That’s where I belong

When I see you smiling
When I hear you singing
Lavender and roses
Every ending a beginning
The way you turn
And catch me with your eye
Ay ay ay
That’s where I belong

When I see you smiling
When I hear you singing
Lavender and roses
Every ending a beginning
That’s the way it is
I don’t know why
Ay ay ay
But that’s where I belong

A spiny little island man
Plays a jingling banjo
He’s walking down a dirt road
Carrying his radio
To a river where the water meets the sky
Ay ay ay
That’s where I belong

I've been exercising lately and the weather has been cooperating somewhat.  It hasn't gotten so bitterly cold that even when you're inside it hurts to look out the window, at least.  Tonight before I came to work I was sitting at my desk and looking at the moon.  With the snow and the moon it was so bright outside it looked like a cloudy day with sharp shadows.

So I decided it was time for a little more exercise.  I went for a walk in the woods.  Once my eyes adjusted to the light outside, it was actually kind of...new-looking out there.  I was walking along trails that have been there in some state of disrepair all of my life and with the snow about a foot deep and crusty, it made the walking a bit more of a chore than walking on a road or sidewalk.  Good exercise and all that.

But I am used to the silence out there so I didn't feel bad about listening to the player as I walked.  I was standing near the property corner on a small clearing on a hill above a swamp with the moon high in the sky in front of me and this song came on.  And it hit me hard.  And I liked it.

I don't know why I haven't heard it before but I guess I can be excused since it was actually burned off a Cities 97 Sampler from a couple of years ago.  It's really a beautiful song.

The group has performed on Conan before, so you should be able to find it somewhere.  There are samples of the song on most of the linked pages here.

Enjoy the song:

You Dance

I won't face another day
I won't wait until tomorrow
I won't spend another night without you
let me carry you away
let me wake you every morning
let me wander every day beside you

'cause you dance in my head, in my heart, in my everything
you belong

you won't worry 'bout a thing
you can sleep a little longer
you can dream another dream beside me
I could walk another road
I could sing another sad song
but I could never make it home without you

'cause you dance in my head, in my heart, in my everything
you belong

'cause you dance in my head, in my heart, in my hands........

I didn't mean for Bruce to make it two songs in a row, but at least they're off of different cds...

Seriously, with the news of a Blackhawk going down in Iraq yesterday combining with another project I'm working on lately, I heard this story by Bruce and part of the message hit me rather squarely:

Fear's a dangerous thing
It can turn your heart black you can trust
It'll take your God filled soul
Fill it with devils and dust

I've never liked fear and I really dislike how some politicians use a general fear of the unknown to garner support by dividing America...but that's for another page.

Fear is powerful and can be as dangerous as anything else, though.  If I could ask everyone to do one thing it would be to face one of their fears today and realize that it won't kill you to do so.  (Unless you have the healthy fear of hungry Grizzly Bears...Live with that fear...)  I never have and still don't like a lot of bugs - the big crunchy kind that live in tropical, well, warmer climates.  I faced that fear in college by having a friend put his pet tarantula on my hand.  I calmly asked him to remove it after it sprinted up my arm and started snuggling with my ear.

My only complaint about this song/cd is the Sony copy protection.  Makes me glad I know some Mac users...

Enjoy your day and this song:

Bruce Springsteen
Devils & Dust - 2005
Devils & Dust

I got my finger on the trigger
But I don't know who to trust
When I look into your eyes
There's just devils and dust
We're a long, long way from home, Bobbie
Home's a long, long way from us
I feel a dirty wind blowing
Devils and dust

I got God on my side
I'm just trying to survive
What if what you do to survive
Kills the things you love
Fear's a powerful thing
It can turn your heart black you can trust
It'll take your God filled soul
And fill it with devils and dust

Well I dreamed of you last night
In a field of blood and stone
The blood began to dry
The smell began to rise
Well I dreamed of you last night
In a field of mud and bone
Your blood began to dry
The smell began to rise

We've got God on our side
We're just trying to survive
What if what you do to survive
Kills the things you love
Fear's a powerful thing
It'll turn your heart black you can trust
It'll take your God filled soul
Fill it with devils and dust

Now every woman and every man
They want to take a righteous stand
Find the love that God wills
And the faith that He commands
I've got my finger on the trigger
And tonight faith just ain't enough
When I look inside my heart
There's just devils and dust

Well I've got God on my side
And I'm just trying to survive
What if what you do to survive
Kills the things you love
Fear's a dangerous thing
It can turn your heart black you can trust
It'll take your God filled soul
Fill it with devils and dust

It'll take your God filled soul

Fill it with devils and dust
